Membership Manager uses Web Parts & Apps extensively as a smarter approach to site management.

Web Parts enables users to easily modify the content, appearance, and behavior of Web pages directly from a browser. They can be placed on web pages by users, and moved around as needed by simply dragging and dropping.

A Web Part, also called a Web Widget, is an ASP.NET server control which is added to a Zone on Web Part Pages by users with proper permissions.

Web Parts can be used as an add-on ASP.NET technology to Membership Manager.

Web Parts are equivalent to Portlets, but in this case hosted within SharePoint.
